Why Archbishop Tutu is wrong about homosexuality

Archbishop TutuArchbishop Tutu recently said that God is for homosexual marriage and would fight for gay rights as much as he fought for an end to apartheid. While I agree with him that all-violence against homosexuals is absolutely wrong and irreconcilable with Christianity, I would differ with him on God’s view on “gay rights” and homosexual marriage.

This is not an anti-sex post. God is very much for sex as evidenced by his creation of us as sexual beings that enjoy sex. God as our Creator also knows how best we can enjoy his good gifts, including the gift of sex. From the very beginning of the Bible we see God’s purpose for sexual unity to take place within the marriage of one woman with one man (Genesis 2:24). God creation purposes are evidenced in the biological differences between men and women.

Being ruthless with sin

bullOf course the basic starting point in dealing with sin in our lives is to make sure we are Christians. Jesus said in Mark 7 that it is “out of the heart comes evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder” and so on. In other words, the problem is not what we wear or whether we have a tattoo or not, but our hearts, our very selves. We need new hearts, we need to be converted, we need to be born again. That is the first step.

Secondly, we need to be disciplined. Job said, “I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin.” (Job 31:1) Job did not presume he would automatically or magically grow in godliness, but made a covenant with himself to work on his holiness. The apostle Paul said, “I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified”. (1 Corinthians 9:27)

National Geographic and the wisdom of God

goat 1Imagine this terrible scenario: You are lying in a hospital bed being kept alive artificially by plastic tubes in your arm and nose. A killer hurricane has destroyed everything you own and all you’ve worked for – your house, you car and your savings. You family has not survived. You’re hanging on to life. You move through the normal stages of grief, but your prayers are tinged with bitterness, “If only God would visit me and give me some answers. What has happened contradicts everything I know about God. If I would just show up and explain why!”

The message of Job vs the “prosperity” gospel

large__6790625269 (1)Christians sometimes experience the depths of despair In Job chapters 1-2 Job has lost his livelihood, his business, his employees, his children and has been inflicted with a loathsome, painful, debilitating skin-disease. Yet 3 times in these chapters it says he is blameless. In other words, he is above reproach, a man of integrity and not living in sin. He is also a believer. Blameless believers, who have not fallen into sin, may go through utter dereliction.
