Original sin and why you should care

cemetery-989920_640Did you realise that, without committing any actual sins, you were condemned before God and accountable to the judgment of God?  Romans 5:12-21 and other places in the Bible teach the doctrine of original sin.  Article 9 of the 39 Articles explains this doctrine:

Original sin does not consist in imitating the sin of Adam, (as the Pelagians wrongly teach), but is the fault and corruption of the nature with which all descendants of Adam are born. It is due to original sin that we have departed very far from the original righteousness in which we were created, and are naturally inclined to evil, with the result that there is a constant war between flesh and the spirit. Accordingly, in every person born into this world, original sin is deserving of God’s wrath and condemnation.

Romans 5:12 describes the order of world history and how this doctrine came to be.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned… (Romans 5:12)

How Christian is Christian TV?

faith-africaThere is a certain activity I do from time to time that is to the detriment to my mental and spiritual health.  I know this, but yet I’m inextricably drawn to switching on the “Christian” TV channel, FAITH TV (channel 341 on Dstv).  If it’s not the prophet speaking, it’s the apostle or bishop.

Of course, they ignore Ephesians 2:20 where it says that the church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and therefore now that the foundation is laid these offices have fallen away.

Of course, they ignore the fact a bishop is an appointed overseer, not a self-appointed leader of their own church.

Nevertheless, the far greater cause of my mental health issues is the blatant false teaching and distortion of the gospel, all in the name of Christ.

May I warn you that if you base your spiritual life and growth on FAITH TV, you are in great spiritual danger.  You need to be committed to a local church to fall under the rule of Christ as God’s word is systematically and consistently preached week by week.

A mistaken call to prayer

frustrationWriting this post is very therapeutic for me.  I have to vent my frustration.  In the past week I received yet another email full of drivel claiming to be Christian.

It was a call to prayer given by another so-called prophet who, of course, had a vision that 2016 is the year of God’s Restoration and Deliverance.

(I thought Hebrews 3:7 & 13 say “Today” is the day for God’s restoration and deliverance whatever the year?)

Anyway, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to stand more firmly for the truth of the gospel by attempting to obey the Apostle Paul’s command in Titus 1:9, “He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.”  Paul also commanded Timothy: “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke (when you see false doctrine or ungodly living), and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” (2 Timothy 4:2)

A prayer for the Middle East

ISISDear Lord of the armies of heaven (Lord of Hosts)

We pray about the war and genocide in the Middle East.

We pray for Christians, our brother and sisters, who are suffering and being persecuted; whose loved ones have been killed; whose children have been murdered; who find themselves in war and refugee camps, our brothers and sisters: we pray that you would strengthen their faith, remind them of your fatherly love and care, and that you use even the most terrible circumstances for good.  Please provide for them physically, spiritually and emotionally.   Please bring an end to the turmoil and violence.

We pray for Muslims and those of other faiths that have been affected by the violence and hatred.  Oh, Sovereign Lord, be pleased to use this massive evil and upheaval to bring many to faith in the living Lord Jesus Christ.  Please grant Christian people, especially in surrounding countries, a great love for their fellow human beings and deep desire to demonstrate the love of Christ in very practical ways.  May we never disregard the stranger and alien and orphan and widow in need.

We pray for the members of DAESH/ISIS.  Lord, please fill them with a realisation of the evilness and terribleness of their deeds.  Please bring them to repentance and faith in Christ.  Lord, if this is not your good will, be pleased to bring about swift justice upon them.  We remember that one day all will stand before the judgment seat of Christ and give an account for every deed.  Thank you that no one will escape your justice.

We pray these things in the precious and powerful name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Commander of the armies of heaven.

Amen.

Hallowed be my name (posts and prayers)

selfieWe all want to hallow our own names.  To hallow means to set apart, to magnify, to honour.  The hallowing of our own names is an age-old problem that goes back to the beginning of history.  Adam and Eve wanted to be their own arbitrators or right and wrong.  Our forefathers sought to build the Tower of Babel to make a name for themselves rather than for God.  Humans are fundamentally narcissistic.
