What is the Christian mission?

refresh“Mission” as a theme is in decline in the church today. Christian “mission” is also a controversial topic among Christians.  Many hold to the view of the church’s mission is better expressed as “social justice” or working for the holistic good of society.

The fundamental question is: What shapes our thoughts on Christian mission?  The state of the world (or country) or God’s word? Of course, God’s Word must shape our thinking on all subjects.

3 John 7 gives us a good summary of Christian mission:

For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. (3 John 7)

Don’t live in cuckoo-cuckoo land

syriaWe don’t need the Bible to tell us about the reality of suffering and evil, it’s all too common to us.  The Bible says we live in a fallen, broken, scarred world where evil and suffering are prevalent.  In fact, the Bible is the only book in our world that can truly explain why the world is like it is.

A terribly bad Anglican proposal

ACSA2Next month, at its provincial synod, the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA) is considering a proposal about LGBTI clergy and same-sex civil unions.  The proposal states that, “clergy who identify as LGBTI and are in legal same-sex civil unions should be licensed to minister in our parishes”.

It also suggests that “prayers of blessing” should be able to be offered for those in same-sex civil unions. However, it also specifically rules out the possibility of marriage under church law.

The proposal, “also accepts that any cleric unwilling to take part in providing pastoral care to people who identify as LGBTI shall not be obliged to do so.”

The horror of hell and planting churches

lamentations FBWe are familiar with the idea of separation. We’ve all experienced it at one time or another.

Jesus taught that at the end of this age there is going to be a separation.  According to Jesus, this world is not going to continue forever.  There will be a supernatural end, a cataclysmic event, a universal conclusion to this present age.  Jesus called this “the Son of Man coming in his glory”.  Jesus, who first came into our world as a baby born in humble circumstances, will return again as the all-powerful King, who sits in judgment over the nations of the world.  Then there will be a separation between what Jesus refers to as goats and the sheep.  Those that belong to Christ, the sheep, the King welcomes them into his kingdom.  To the goats, those who have rejected Christ, the King says the exact opposite: to depart from him “into the eternal fire” of “eternal punishment”. (cf. Matthew 25:31-32, 41, 46)

Jesus said don’t fear ISIS terrorists

ISISOn 16 July 2016 a faction of the army in Turkey tried to take control of the government in a coup. Soldiers, tanks and F16 Jet Fighters invaded Istanbul. 280 people were killed, but ultimately the coup failed.  TIME magazine called it: Turkey’s long night of the soul.

The good news was that the night came to an end, warring stopped, day dawned, hostilities ceased, and the fierce anger stopped.

In contrast, the Bible teaches of future time of God’s judgment, wrath and anger on sin that will not cease.
