Sex in the real world

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Genesis 2.24

The Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.

Malachi 2.24

God’s general purpose* for people is heterosexual, monogamous marriage.

The Bible tells us when two people of opposite sexes are joined together in marriage, there is a bonding, a new togetherness, an emotional attachment and a mysterious oneness.

Once you are married, you no longer live just considering yourself; there is a new bond with your spouse.

Sexual oneness demonstrates and evidences this oneness of marriage.

It is extremely dangerous, therefore, to be sexually active before marriage; the emotional baggage simply piles up.

This will sound very strange to most people today.

Hollywood tells us to live together and have multiple sexual partners before marriage.  When we discover the “special one” i.e. someone we have great sex with – then we should get married.

The result in reality?

Many unhappy marriages, rampant STD’s, hurt, pain, loneliness and divorce – not every time, but most times.

Studies show that over 50% of couples first living together ever get married.

In the United States and UK, couples who live together are at a greater risk for divorce.

Psychology Today states:

Counter-intuitively, many studies have found that premarital cohabitation is associated with increased risk of divorce, a lower quality of marriage, poorer marital communication, and higher levels of domestic violence.

However, in the movie, the previously co-habiting married couple (who have had multiple sexual partners) looks so happy.

God’s plan is that all sexual activity is reserved for marriage.   A secure, permanent, publicly acknowledged relationship.

Married couples are supposed to have the worst sex on their wedding night (as no one knows what they are doing!) and then spend a lifelong marriage learning to have better and better sex, intimacy and companionship.

Hollywood says that marriage is not that great and sex in marriage becomes boring.

God says that marriage is great and sex gets better.

God is our Creator.  He definitely knows what’s best for us.

If you’re single, God’s best is that you do not engage in sexual activity, like Jesus.

If you’re married, God’s best is that you keep all sexual activity for your spouse.

Don’t buy Hollywood’s lies.  Believe God’s truth. It’s for your good.

*Some people may remain single, like Jesus!
